What is the threshold in compression?

When you load up a compression plugin in your DAW, your compressor will be controlled by a handful of parameters. These parameters include threshold, ratio, attack, release, knee, and gain. To get the best results from the compression that you apply in your mix, you need to know what each of these parameters does.
