Today, I want to share a few simple ways to get great electric guitar tones at home.
1. Start with the source.
A well-intonated guitar with fresh strings and the right pickup selection goes a long way. Get the tone right before you even hit record.
2. Layer for richness.
Record two versions of the same part using slightly different tones. This can help your guitars sound bigger and fuller in the mix.
3. Make amp sims sound more like real amps.
Amp sims can sound great, but they can sometimes sound harsh in the top end. A gentle low-pass filter around 8–10 kHz can smooth them out and make them sound more like real amps.
4. Low-end management.
When recording guitars, you’ll often capture more low end than you actually need. Use a high-pass filter to clean up that excess low end and make space for the bass guitar and kick drum in your mix.
These simple steps will go a long way to getting great sounding guitar tracks at home.
Give these tips a try on your next recording!
