Today, I want to talk about one of the hardest parts of producing your own music — knowing when your mix is actually finished.
When you’ve heard the same song over and over again, it’s easy to lose perspective.
Here are a few ways to decide when to finally put the faders down:
1. You’re making different, not better, changes.
If you keep tweaking but can’t tell whether the changes actually sound better — they just sound different — you’ve probably stopped improving the mix and are just moving things sideways. That’s usually a sign you’re done.
2. It sounds good on different systems.
Many people get stuck here — they play the mix on monitors, headphones, earbuds, in the car, and notice each system sounds different. That’s normal! Every playback system has its own frequency response. Instead of trying to make it sound the same everywhere, ask yourself: is it balanced? Can you hear each element in relation to the rest of the mix in roughly the way you intended? If so, it’s time to stop.
3. Take a break, then listen fresh.
Walk away from the song for a few days and don’t listen to it. When you come back, your ears will instantly spot anything that truly needs fixing. If nothing stands out — or only one tiny thing does — make that small tweak, and call it finished.
Try these three steps near the end of your next mix and see if they help you recognize when your mix is truly done. I’d love to hear how you get on!
