Let’s talk about perfectionism when it comes to producing music in a home studio.
It’s great to have high standards and to aspire to create something you can be really proud of. But there are times when a quest for “perfect” results can really hold us back.
Perfectionism is one of the biggest reasons we end up with a computer full of unfinished projects, because something doesn’t sound as good as you feel it could or should.
I struggle with this myself — with my mixes, masters, these emails, etc…
Three things I have to constantly remind myself:
- There’s no such thing as perfect
- A finished song that you can share with friends, family, and fans is far closer to perfect than an unfinished one that no one gets to hear
- The more songs you finish, the faster your skills improve, and the closer you get to creating results you can be really proud of
It’s time to stop aiming for perfect and start aiming for finished.
You’d be amazed how much you improve when you do — and how impressed people are with the mixes you put out there… even the ones you thought weren’t good enough.
