A Workflow That Gets Mixes Finished

One of the biggest time-wasters in mixing is this: jumping around randomly between tasks.

  • Perhaps you start with setting some levels…
  • Then focus on one track and apply EQ…
  • Then go back to levels…
  • Then add some compression to a different track…
  • Then back to EQ…
  • Then second-guess everything you’ve done and start from scratch…

It’s far better to follow a simple, structured workflow. It can save you hours and it leads to better results.

Here’s the workflow I use on every mix:

Step 1: Levels and Panning
My first step is to make the mix sound as good as it can using only level faders and pan pots. Get the mix sounding as good as possible before adding any plugins.

Step 2: EQ
I then EQ every track in the mix. Whether I’m removing unwanted low end, creating separation so each instrument has its own space, or giving the guitars more bite, I do all of the EQ for every track before I move on.

Step 3: Compression
After I’ve completed the EQ, it’s compression. I use compression to balance levels, and sometimes to make signals sound fatter or punchier.

Step 4: Reverb
Now, with the levels, panning, EQ, and compression in place, I work on the reverb for the whole mix. I apply reverb to make signals feel more natural and to give a sense of space and depth.

Step 5: Automation
Finally, I carry out the automation. If levels need to change as the song plays, I automate them. If the EQ needs to change, I automate it. If the reverb needs to evolve, I automate that too.

Each step builds on the previous one.

And of course, if I need to, I can always go back and tweak an earlier stage.

But instead of roaming around the mix carrying out random tasks with no real plan, I have a clear, systematic path that guides me through the mix.

Try this on your next mix and let me know if this approach works for you.
