How To Make Consistent Improvements In Your Mixes

If there’s one thing I’d encourage you to aim for when it comes to mixing, it’s this: steady, consistent improvement.

A lot of people aim for the “pro sounding mix”.

And that’s understandable… but there’s a problem.

It’s completely subjective, so it’s very hard to know when you’ve actually achieved it.

On the other hand, aiming for consistent improvement is something you can actually measure.

Here’s how:

Each time you finish a mix, leave it for a few days to let your ears reset, then come back and review it.

Ask yourself:

  • What sounds better than my last mix?
  • What have I improved?
  • What still needs work?

Identify the areas you’re not happy with, then go away, learn more about them, and apply that knowledge to your next mix.

Then the process repeats.

On the next mix:

  • What went well?
  • Did I improve on the areas I struggled with last time?
  • What should I focus on next?

The long-term result?

Your skill set expands, your confidence grows, and your mixes get consistently better.

This is a far more realistic and achievable approach than chasing a vague idea of a “pro” mix.
