Today, I want to show you how to make your mix sound polished and finished even before you master it — using mix bus processing.
The “mix bus” is your final stereo output of the whole mix. Some people apply processing directly to the master fader, while others route the mix through a dedicated bus first. Either way, subtle processing here can really help to enhance the sound of your mix.
Here are some plugins you might consider using on your mix bus:
1. Saturation or Tape Plugin
A tape or saturation plugin can give your mix analogue-style warmth and make things sound fuller and more cohesive.
2. EQ
An EQ plugin on the mix bus lets you gently shape the frequency response of the whole mix — making it brighter, warmer, fuller, or reducing harshness and muddiness.
3. Bus Compression
Experiment with compressing the whole mix. I typically start with a ratio of 1.5:1, rarely going above 2:1. Use a slow attack and fast release, aiming for 1–2dB of gain reduction on the meter. This adds subtle “glue” to the mix.
This simple chain can go a long way in giving your mix that final polish before mastering. But remember, the best results come from gentle, subtle changes — you’re enhancing an already solid mix, not fixing a bad one.
Try this on your next mix, and I’d love to hear how it benefits your tracks!
