Getting A Cohesive Sound Across Your Songs

If you’re planning a multi-song project — like an EP or album — this post is for you.

It’s all about creating a consistent, cohesive sound across your songs.

The goal isn’t to make every track sound identical, but to make them feel like they belong together.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Consistent plugins
Many people use lots of different plugins, searching for the “perfect” EQ or Compressor for each situation. My approach is the opposite: I use fewer plugins and rely on them consistently across every mix. This ties your songs together sonically and helps them feel cohesive.

2. Consistent reverb
Your choice of reverb can vary depending on the mood, tempo, or style of a song — and some variety is great. But striking a balance is key. Keeping some consistency in your reverb helps tie the tracks together. If every song feels like it’s in a wildly different space, the project can feel disconnected.

3. Master together
Instead of mastering each mix individually as soon as it’s finished, wait until all your mixes are done and master them together in one session. This helps achieve tonal balance, dynamic relationships, and intentional level relationships between all songs.

Cohesion can turn a collection of individual songs into a unified release. It’s subtle, but noticeable.

Try this out on your next few songs and let me know if it works for you.
