Today, I want to share a few simple but powerful tips to help you capture better-sounding guitar recordings at home, whether you’re tracking acoustic or electric.
For acoustic guitar:
-
Record in a room with carpets, curtains, or other materials that reduce reflections.
-
Position yourself in the centre of the room, away from walls or reflective surfaces.
-
Use a large-diaphragm condenser mic, placed in line with the 12th fret, about 12” away, angled towards the sound hole.
These three steps can make a huge difference in capturing great acoustic guitar tracks at home.
For electric guitar:
-
Follow the same guidelines for room and amp placement.
-
Place your large-diaphragm condenser about 6” from the speaker, positioned halfway between the speaker’s centre and outer edge.
-
Adjust the mic placement: move it toward the centre for more brightness and bite, or toward the edge for a darker, smoother tone. Move closer to the speaker for more low end, or further away for more room sound.
This approach helps you capture a varied range of tones, all from the same set-up.
Give these tips a try on your next guitar recording, and let me know how it goes — I’d love to hear what difference they make in your tracks!
